Jewish cemetery in Sumgait

Sumgait is a city in Azerbaijan on the coast of the Caspian Sea, 31 km north of Baku. It is one of three centers of Jewish communities. To be more precise, Ashkenazi Jews live in Sumgait and Baku. The other two communities are Mountain Jews, living mainly in Guba (the village of Krasnaya Sloboda) and Baku. As well as a community of Georgian Jews, concentrated almost exclusively in Baku. In the post-Soviet period, due to mass emigration and the natural decline of the last two groups, Mountain Jews became the only significant Jewish community in Azerbaijan. Now the Jewish community of Sumgait numbers approximately 60 people. But, despite the small size of the community, there is a branch of the Baku “Hesed Gershon” in the city.

Unfortunately, at present there is no separate Jewish cemetery in Sumgait as such. The oldest Jewish graves preserved in the city are those from the 60s of the last century, located on the territory of the international cemetery, located in the 11th microdistrict of the city, at the intersection of Badalbeyli and Koroglu Streets. Locals call this cemetery Russian-Armenian.

Now there are about 65 Jewish graves in this cemetery.

This cemetery is about an hour's drive from the Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku.
