Jewish cemetery in Troitsk

Famous Chelyabinsk regional historian Vasiliy Vishnevskiy, with whom we closely cooperate, wrote an article about the old Jewish cemetery in Troitsk (Chelyabinsk region, Russia). We would like to tell a little about his work, published in the magazine "Magistra vitae"

In the second third of the XIX century, in the city of Troitsk (Chelyabinsk region) the formation of the Jewish community began. According to the Jewish religion, an important precept for the Jewish community is the early creation of a separate Jewish cemetery. In Troitsk, such a cemetery, created long before the revolution, has survived to this day. The tombstones of the old Jewish cemeteries are an important source in the study of the history of local Jewish communities. The author of the article conducted a field study of the Troitsk Jewish cemetery. At the same time, typical features of burials of this cemetery were noted; the data indicated on the tombstones were copied and processed. As a result, it was possible to find out the chronological framework of the functioning of the Jewish cemetery of Troitsk. Information on the languages used in gravestone inscriptions, the use of the national calendar when specifying the date of death, the specific features of graves of different periods, and other valuable statistical information was gathered. The indication on the tombstones of information representing historical and genealogical interest was noted. A list of people buried in the Troitsk Jewish cemetery is made up.
